Understanding Behaviour, Inclusion and Communication

This practical professional-development program equips disability support workers, educators and other support professionals with the knowledge and strategies needed to better understand behaviour, communicate effectively and create more inclusive environments. Delivered by PBS With Portia, the training explores behaviour as a form of communication and introduces participants to the foundations of Positive Behaviour Support. Participants will learn how to identify possible triggers and unmet needs, use the ABC observation framework, communicate in accessible ways and implement proactive strategies that support regulation, participation and quality of life. The program combines clear explanations with practical scenarios, group discussions, reflection activities and workplace examples. Participants will also strengthen their skills in objective documentation, professional communication, consistent strategy implementation and recognising when additional guidance or support is required. By the end of the program, participants will be able to: - Recognise behaviour as meaningful communication - Understand the foundations of Positive Behaviour Support - Identify environmental, sensory and communication factors that may influence behaviour - Use the ABC framework to observe and document behaviour objectively - Apply proactive strategies to reduce distress and support regulation - Adapt communication to meet individual needs - Promote dignity, choice, inclusion and meaningful participation - Respond consistently while working within professional roles and responsibilities Participants will leave with practical strategies they can begin applying in their workplace, along with an individual action plan to support ongoing professional development. This paid training is suitable for support workers, educators, allied health assistants, community service professionals and teams supporting neurodivergent people or individuals with disability.
