About
The Science Behind Behaviour Develop a stronger understanding of why behaviour occurs and learn how to respond with greater confidence, curiosity and compassion. In this PBS With Portia training module, participants explore behaviour as a form of communication and examine the personal, environmental, sensory and communication factors that may influence what they observe. The module introduces the ABC observation model, helping participants record what happened before, during and immediately after a behaviour. Participants will also learn how to use objective language, recognise patterns, consider possible functions of behaviour and avoid making conclusions based on a single event. Through practical examples, guided reflection and a workplace scenario, participants will learn how their communication, expectations and responses can influence outcomes. This module covers: Behaviour as communication Personal and environmental influences on behaviour The nervous system, arousal and regulation Sensory processing and access needs The ABC observation model Objective behaviour documentation Possible functions of behaviour Identifying patterns and setting events The impact of staff responses Proactive and person-centred support strategies By the end of the module, participants will be better equipped to observe behaviour objectively, contribute useful information to the care team and provide respectful support that protects dignity, improves access and responds to the individual’s needs. This module is suitable for support workers, educators, disability professionals, carers and others who support people with diverse behavioural, communication or regulation needs.
